Kerala owns India’s gold consumption but it doesn’t build for it

Everybody knows that Kerala consumes ~25% of India’s entire gold. But somehow, it is also quietly one of India’s smallest jewellery makers.

Think about who owns India's jewellery retail.

Malabar. Kalyan. Joyalukkas. Bhima. Josco. Alukkas.

Almost every national chain traces back to Thrissur, a single district in Kerala. The state has over 6,000 jewellery shops. Even Muthoot and Manappuram, the gold-loan giants, are Kerala-born.

Kerala households treat gold as savings, as a wedding custom, and as status. Foreign remittances hit ₹2.5 lakh crore in 2025, nearly a quarter of the state's entire income. A lot of it went straight into gold.

So Kerala has the demand. It has the brands. It has the capital.

And yet it grows no diamonds, cuts almost none, and runs no serious jewellery manufacturing at scale. Only limited ops in that one city of Thrissur.

Where do its own giants build their factories?

Malabar's flagship diamond-jewellery plant is in Hyderabad, not Kerala. It has a large new unit in West Bengal.

Joyalukkas manufactures heavily in Coimbatore.

Of Malabar's ten Indian factories, only two sit in Kerala.

So, why does the state export its own production? The reasons basis our study, all point the same way.

* A services and consumption economy funded by Gulf money, not factories.

* India's highest union density and above-average wages.

* Costly, densely populated land.

Diamond cutting and jewellery assembly are low-margin, labour-cost businesses. They go where labour is cheap and workshops run cheap. Kerala, by design and by history, is the opposite of that.

And, here is the part that stays with me.

Even Kerala's traditional goldsmith clusters in Thrissur run on roughly 20k migrant workers from Bengal and Odisha.

Means? Kerala captures the demand and the brand equity. It exports the jobs.

And I just think - Consumption is a wonderful thing to own. But it is not the same as building.

And that difference shows up as factories, payrolls and export earnings, all sitting in other states. No?
